This documentary about photographer Ernest Cole is out this Friday:
More than 60,000 of Ernest Cole’s 35mm film negatives were inexplicably discovered in a bank vault in Stockholm, Sweden. Most considered these forever lost, especially the thousands of pictures he shot in the U.S. Told through Cole’s own writings, the stories of those closest to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work, the film is a reintroduction of a pivotal Black artist to a new generation and will unravel the mystery of his missing negatives.
I’ll be going to see it at the weekend for sure. Reviews are great, e.g.
I went and saw this yesterday. I wasn’t familiar with Ernest Cole but his work is truly excellent. I liked the doc, the photographs really brought a unique perspective to the events that happened, and ultimately what exile meant for him. Would definitely recommend!
Yes! I saw it today and thought it was excellent. Some tough viewing at times because of the subject matter, but the way they presented his photos was great, and they’re so incredible.
I think it’ll probably get an airing on Netflix soon as they seemed to be one of the production companies.
I saw the shots in the Photographers Gallery in London last year. His work is excellent. Did see shot shots in MoMa in 2023 and I was like wow how have I not heard of him.
Kinda gutted to miss this. Times are during the day now don’t think I’ll get away with skiving work to see it haha.
