Ignoring the greats, who are your biggest inspirations right now? Here are a few people I’m absolutely in awe of. You can probably tell I prefer the more ‘arty’ side of street photography as opposed to the candid/mapcap sort of stuff. I like the candid, just prefer the arty
- Ovidiu Șelaru. He’s a total master in my opinion, we’ll look back in many years and think of him as one of the greats.
- Nina Papiorek. I only discovered Nina recently (she was in FUJILOVE magazine) but her minimal black and white work is exceptional. I can only dream of capturing shots like this!
- Mark Fearnley. Master of minimal, similar to Ovidiu in some ways. He’s also probably the most rock and roll photographer I know
- Eren Sarigul. Eren’s photography is amazing, and his video work on YouTube might be even better. Very filmic, but he manages to capture expressions and gestures so well – just like Ovidiu, but often better (or more to my liking, I should say)
- Niall McDiarmid. Maybe he’s not ‘street’ like others, but he takes portraits on the street so I guess that counts. Again, he has just a brilliant way of capturing emotion in his photos, as well as his use of colour. Inspiring.
- Alan Schaller. An obvious one, perhaps, but I think his composition skills and creative eye are incredible. His YouTube is also brilliant. I wish he’d do some colour photos as I think he’d be amazing at that too.
- Oscar Diaz. Oscar’s work is exceptional, not just because of the colour and composition but because of the mad retro scenes he somehow finds. Maybe this is unique to NYC, but either way his photographic eye is brilliant.
- Philip Penman. Another arty black and white-only photographer, and from NYC too, but his work is undeniably superb. I mean, he’s in MOMA so what more do you need to say?!
- Anthony Murray - alternative.exposure. Anthony takes blurred photos, which sounds weird or maybe even easy, but to get so much emotion and intrigue in them is a real skill. Pure art.
There are plenty more I admire, but I’d say these are the people who’ve inspired me most to get out there and improve my photography over the last few years.
